Walk through Glendale Cemetery
Saturday 31 May
Downtown Akron - 10am - 2 Hours
Marc Braun
Glendale is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was established in 1839 by Dr. J.D. Commins. It has a park-like setting for a cemetery in Akron. The cemetery features a wide variety of architectural styles that draw upon ancient building forms. Mausoleums are modeled after Egyptian, Greek, and Roman temples or Gothic churches. The stately mausoleums and symbolic statues are scattered throughout, honoring prominent citizens of Akron, including politicians, famous industrialists, and Akron socialites.
The Civil War Memorial Chapel, located in Glendale Cemetery, is one of the premier Civil War memorials within the State of Ohio and throughout the United States. The most striking features of the Chapel are its handsome memorial windows. The glass is European rolled cathedral glass imported from Scotland.
We will have the opportunity to explore the Chapel both outside and inside, and then see what interesting architecture and historical markers can be found. You may also come across a wide variety of wildlife that lives in the cemetery. Join me for a walk through historic Akron.
We will look at how composition and light work together to help create great images
